A new 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E Hatchback starts at $46,030 in California. Prices will vary depending on what trim level you choose. Each state may have different pricing, so make sure you enter Optional GT/CS Package Kicks Things up a Notch California dreamin' on such a winter’s day? Ford’s got just the cure in its “California Special” GT/CS Mustang, which pays homage to the limited-edition Mustang package sold by California dealers in 1968. First Glance: She’s a Beauty The first thing that came to mind as I glanced at my Race Red GT/CS Mustang was, “Wow, what a looker.” The car was loaded with numerous Mustang goodies including 19-inch gloss black-painted machined aluminum wheels, body-color side scoops, a pedestal decklid spoiler, heated leather trim sport seats and a stainless steel dual exhaust. The car was even equipped with a limited-slip axle. The car’s side mirrors, with optional pony projection lights, cast the image of the Mustang's famous pony emblem on the ground when the unlock button is activated. How cool is that? California Special Package The California Special Package is an appearance package option offered on Premium edition GT Mustangs, Features include: Arresting black billet grille with a body-color surround Tri-bar Pony badge Unique lower fascia with fog lamps Body-color side scoops Rear pedestal decklid spoiler and unique decklid badge with “California Special” displayed on the rear gas cap badge Diffuser-style rear lower fascia insert 19-inch gloss black painted machined aluminum wheels with P245/45-19 A/S tires Aluminum instrument panel with carbon-style finish Exclusive interior Miko suede door panel inserts Leather-trimmed seats with Miko suede inserts and contrast stitching Premium carpeted front floor mats with an embroidered California Special logo While no performance upgrades are offered as part of the package, there are plenty of visual enhancements for drivers looking to kick things up a notch. In the Driver's Seat: Feel like a Star My California Special Mustang was loaded with several interior creature comforts. Take, for instance, the dual zone electronic automatic temperature control system. This option, which is part of the optional Electronics Package, allows for different temperature settings depending on where you’re sitting in the car. Another feature of the Electronics Package was the car’s navigation system, which was equipped with SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link. The Mustang was also equipped with ambient lighting, which is a standard feature on Premium GT Mustangs. Some other noteworthy standard features include a universal garage door opener, an electrochromic auto-dimming rear-view mirror, SiriusXM satellite radio and a LCD message center with MyColor and Track Apps. The car’s optional Comfort Package included six-way adjustable power heated front seats and the heated side mirrors with pony projection lights. In all, the cabin felt very comfortable, with plenty of visual accents, like GT/CS lettering on the dash. While the back seat area felt somewhat cramped, kids and small adults shouldn’t have a problem back there for short periods of time. I found the driver’s side setup to be comfortable, even for extended periods of driving. The steering wheel’s integrated audio controls continue to be a great feature. On the Road: Well Balanced with Plenty of Power One of my favorite memories of the GT/CS was taking it out for a cruise. With 420 horsepower and 390 of torque at my disposal, the Mustang’s V8 engine did not disappoint. In an effort to really soak up the whole “California” experience, I took the GT/CS out for a Saturday morning cruise along the beautiful Pacific Coast Highway. With the ocean to my left and the mountains to my right, the GT/CS galloped along, eager for action. Somewhere between Point Dume and Leo Carrillo State Beach I had an opportunity to really open her up. The GT/CS accelerated quickly, with ease. Even better was the sound of that dual exhaust as I put my foot to the floor. On my return trip back to Los Angeles, I navigated through the narrow two-lane mountain roads that connect Malibu to the San Fernando Valley. The car held nicely to the road, handling twists and turns with ease. My only gripe relates to the car’s rear decklid spoiler. The thing, combined with the rear seat headrests in their up position, obscures the view from the rear view mirror, and can take some getting used. That said, it’s not a deal breaker and the headrests do fold down. Journey's End: Plenty of Visual Bang for the Buck I had a blast driving the 2013 GT/CS Mustang for a week here in Los Angeles. In a town that’s all about glitz and glam, the car felt right at home. While some folks may balk at the GT/CS due to its absence of noticeable performance upgrades like those found on the GT500 or Boss 302, I think the car is a real deal. For only $1,995, buyers can transform an already slick-looking premium GT Mustang into a pony that’s sure to attract attention. That said, if you’re dead-set on performance enhancements, you can always opt for the optional Brembo Brake Package, as well as numerous performance upgrades offered by Ford Racing Performance Parts. The GT/CS Mustang, which is assembled in Flat Rock, Michigan, is available in both coupe and convertible versions; purchase entitles the owner to inclusion in the official enthusiast-run GT/CS Registry. It comes with a 3 year/36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, a 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty, and 5 years/60,000 miles of roadside assistance. In Brief What I Liked About the 2013 GT/CS California Special Ford Mustang: Great overall value for the package priceThe car sports some amazing looksThe car’s pony projection lights were a great optional feature What I Didn't Like About the 2013 GT/CS California Special Ford Mustang: The rear seat headrests in their up position, combined with the rear-pedestal decklid spoiler, can make for some serious blind spots Who Should Buy the 2013 GT/CS California Special Ford Mustang: Buyers seeking a Mustang that stands out in a crowd with its exterior features Who should not buy the 2013 GT/CS California Special Ford Mustang: Buyers seeking serious performance upgrades in addition to custom exterior stylingThose seeking a high mileage vehicle. On average, our tester got 16 mpg, combined highway and freeway driving in Los Angeles Manufacturer's Site During the '68 model year, Ford retired the 289 in favor of the F-code two-barrel, 210-hp 302. Billed as the Challenger Special V-8 in the Mustang was another 302, the J-code four-barrel, 10:1 engine that produced 230 horsepower. Beyond the small-block options, Ford offered three big-block V-8s for Mustang in 1968.

1 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible The Ford Mustang is a surprisingly flexible sports car. 2 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible At the entry point, it can be very affordable. As a convertible, it can be remarkably comfortable. And in GT trim, it boasts quite good performance thrills. 3 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible The convertible top raises and lowers at the touch of a button. It takes between 13 and 16 seconds to finish its Z-fold ballet. 4 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible The convertible top leaves a bit of the hardware exposed when stowed. I don't think it's so bad, but Ford seems to dislike it enough that the automaker includes an awkward pair of covers for the ends. 5 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible The GT is powered by a V-8 engine. Torque is stated at 400 pound-feet and power at 435 horsies. 6 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible The California Special edition features black trim, black wheels and GT-CS badging throughout. 7 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible This isn't my favorite color combo, but the orange is an imposing and eye-catching hue. 8 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible The California Special package includes these 19-inch black design wheels. 9 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible It's powerful and makes a good sound, but the GT's V-8 is also a pretty good-looking engine. Pop the hood and enjoy the view. 10 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible At first glance, the GT Premium's cabin looks pretty nice with its leather and suede seats. After you've been staring at the plastic dashboard for a week, it starts to look and feel like an economy car. 11 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible For 2016, the GT Mustang gets these retro-inspired turn signal repeaters on the hood. They're very cool additions that add a bit of style. 12 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible The GT also comes standard with an electronic line-locker -- basically an instant burnout mode -- and launch control for models equipped with the manual transmission. 13 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 14 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 15 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 16 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 17 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 18 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 19 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 20 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 21 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 22 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 23 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 24 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 25 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 26 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 27 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 28 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 29 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 30 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 31 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 32 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 33 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 34 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 35 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 36 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 37 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 38 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 39 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible 40 of 40 Antuan Goodwin/CNET 2016 Ford Mustang GT California Special convertible

The California Special nameplate has returned, but what does it mean and what is the history behind it? For 2022, Ford Australia has brought back an iconic nameplate, the California Special, for its Mustang V8 coupe and convertible. Prices will start from $67,290 for a manual California Special coupe – $2000 more than a standard version – and buyers receive cool cosmetic differences over a standard Mustang. The California Special does not receive any extra power or other performance enhancements, however what it does get is extra street cred not found on a regular Mustang. The 2022 Mustang California Special retains the same cosmetic touches as the original So where did the California Special nameplate come from, and why is it significant to the Ford brand after all this time? A brief history lesson on the California Special Mustang Way back in 1968, Ford decided to change up the current Mustang spec and release a limited edition car, which they named the California Special. This was in order to compete with the rest of the muscle car competition at the time, mainly from massive competitors such as the Camaro, Firebird, Gran Torino and even the Mercury Cougar. At the time, California was found to be responsible for 20 percent of all Mustang sales in the United States, so it made sense for Ford to market a car directly to that part of the country. Note the cool side scoops near the doors The original plan was to build just 5000 of these cars for the American market, however only 4118 were made. So what did Ford do to the Mustang to make it have more street cred for the California Special? Work was done to add side scoops, bonnet pins, a rear spoiler deck lid and a set of side stripes with the ‘GT/CS’ branding front and centre. Ford has harked back to this branding with the new 2022 California Special. But did the California Special get any extra power? Much like the new 2022 Mustang CS, the special edition was more about cosmetic changes rather than engine or suspension modifications. Power is unchanged but this muscle car gets extra cool points The California Special trim was available on all Mustang engine combinations from small block 289 units right up to big block 390 and 428 V8 engines. The 1968 California Special is seen today by car collectors to be highly desirable and some have reached significant prices at auction. The cosmetic CS package has also been available on the 2011 Ford Mustang as well as the 2013 and 2014 models, however these were only available in the United States. This is the same badging originally found on the 1968 version The 2022 CS model adds mainly cosmetic changes to the otherwise stylish Mustang. The California Appearance package includes a blacked-out grille, accent stripe and rear fender scoop. Like the Australian-delivered Mustang GT on which it is based, the California Special is fitted with a larger front splitter from the US-spec GT Performance package, while there are unique five spoke alloy wheels at each corner. On the inside, black suede door trims and suede covered seats with embossed logos and red contrast stitching are all available over a standard Mustang GT. The instrument panel is finished in carbon hex aluminium with a signature California Special script on the passenger side. You get embossed seats with red stitching for extra sporting flair Engine performance remains the standard 339kW and 556Nm however that will likely be plenty of punch for most. The car comes standard with an active variable exhaust system which can be adjusted electronically from quiet and sensitive to loud and obnoxious. The California Special trim for 2022 is only available on V8 models. Ford Mustang 2022: prices in Australia All prices listed are before on-road costs.
